M I G R A I N
M- Media Language: Sugar Rush was produced by the company responsible for teen drama series As If, and shares many of the same production values. Both are glossy and vividly colored, with quick editing and a poppy soundtrack to keep things moving, making both shows the dramatic equivalent of the Bacardi Breezers so beloved of British teenagers--colorful and sweet, but with a punch. Mise en scene is important as the film is about a middle class girl living in Brighton. The whole show is shot in Brighton. Brighton is not seen as a very glamorous and wealthy area, Brighton, an English seaside town long associated with amusement arcades, dirty weekends and homosexuality. It is set near the pier which gives an economical look since it’s a low budgeted show. It also reflects one of the characters lives as Sugar is not well off and finds her self sleeping in a different place every night.
I- Shown on Channel four and based on Julie’s Burchill’s Sugar Rush
G- It’s a teen drama and can be compared to other shows in the same category such as Bad Girls, The L Word, Finger Smith, Hex etc. The two main chracters are Sugar and Kim. The entire show is based on them and how chaotic their lives are. The directors did this deliberatly in order to gain the audience's attention. Its a teen drama, which shold be jammed packed with crazy scenarios that teens have to deal with everyday. It should resemble reality.
R- How the role of women and teenager has changed? How confident are youths with their sexuality? Are they still seen as the trouble makers of society? It’s not a patriarchal society any longer and women are allowed to behave like men in the relationships. It reinforces power and feminist views. It represents a nuclear family and illustrates how far they are from normality. Role reversal- the mother being a teenager and the Teenager being the woman of the household. The father being passive and doing the duites of a stereotypical mother. For example cooking, cleaning and looking after the children.
A- But while As If was on in the early evening and Sunday lunchtimes, Channel 4 has scheduled Sugar Rush at 10:50pm, a little late for what should be considered its target audience, especially on a school night. This is probably due to strong language and “scenes of sexual nature” but it does beg the question: what audience is Channel 4 targeting? The show offers voyeuristic pleasures to the audience
I- Ideologies and Values: Feminism VS Patriarchy. Family Values VS Independence.
N- Sugar Rush explores the world of Kim and her earth-shattering lust for the gorgeous and sassy Maria Sweet, otherwise known as Sugar. And if Sugar wasn't enough to blow Kim's mind, there's also her dysfunctional, embarrassing family - a mini-freak for a brother, an obsessively house-proud dad and a mum who's behaving as if she's the one who's 15 years old. Each episode is a different journey inside Kim's world as her wry observations take us into the mind of a screwed up, loved up, lustful adolescent experiencing the bright lights of Brighton and the rush of forbidden love for the first time.Kim lives with her father and little brother, Matt but also her mother, Stella. Stella is a monster of breathtaking self-absorption, but having her at home enhances the drama: it gives another layer to Kim’s increasing complicated life
